Fantastic start to JKS Brecon Senshi's 2014!
Congratulations to students Matt Stockham, Nikki Stockham, Ryan Winney and Rhiannon Rogers on being selected for JKS England Squad 2014. Our students travelled to England's most successful club, Leeds Karate Academy where selections were taking place for Kata and Kumite on Sunday 12th January. Nikki and Ryan amongst many others performed their favourite heian kata in front of Matt Price Sensei and Nick Heald Sensei to try and confirm their place amongst the squad. Not all who trained were selected, however, Nikki and Ryan were successful in gaining their spot on the Kata squad. Congratulations!
This was followed by Matt, Nikki and Rhiannon who had to fight and show the two Sensei's their potential to compete on the National and International circuit this coming year. Rhiannon fought first, competing against a very talented and sharp opponent. She landed many good and sharp techniques which gained her points and her place in the squad. Nikki followed also fighting a new hopeful for the JKS squad; she showed a variety of techniques using punching and kicking combinations resulting in her place also being confirmed. Matthew also showed impressive speed and combinations during the duration of class and therefore he also confirmed his place to represent JKS England.
Congratulations all. You did us all proud!

Exciting Times Ahead For The New JKS Brecon
After much consideration Sensei Derek, with the assistance of Sensei Matthew, made the complex and difficult decision to leave the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) and join one of Britains largest karate associations; the JKS. Through joining this organisation, we are now able to offer our students a much larger variety of competitions with a much higher standard of karateka; Sensei Derek and Matthew believe that with these amazing opportunities our students can only grow and develop; with the JKS there is also the incredible possibility of competing in the Olympics in the future.

Rhydian Rogers, pass shodan.
In November one of Brecon's youngest students Rhydian Rogers took the long drive with Senseis Derek and Matt to Lichfield near Birmingham, to train at the Black and Brown belt course under the instruction of Sensei Sherry and Sensei Poynton. The course was also attended by a very nervous Rhiannon Rogers, one of the club's senior black belts.
As expected, the instruction was very detailed and the two Sensei's concentrated on the grading syllabus and kata's. After two hours training, grading time arrived and the very first name called out was our very own Rhydian. After his compulsory kihon and kata was completed, he was called up for the kumite against a very sharp competitor from Malvern club who are renowned for their strong kumite. This section of the grading, caused a little concern for the two Brecon Senseis, however, Rhydian did the club proud with superb attitude and aggression. Rhydian constantly attacked without taking one step backwards throughout the fight and was rewarded with several scoring points on his opponent.
After a long wait for the result, a very delighted Rhydian was awarded his black belt grade by Sensei Andy Sherry.

Tracksuits Update
After much deliberation, Sensei Derek and Matt have decided to postpone ordering new tracksuits until the new year.
We believe that with the Awards Night approaching fast, five of our students travelling to Serbia for the ESKA Championships and following closely after that Christmas, asking parents to purchase new merchandise for the club may be too much.
Therefore as next year is our official 30th year, tracksuits, polo's, hoodies and kit bag order forms will be distributed in the new year!
Sorry for any inconvienience.

New tracksuits for a new year
Next year Brecon Shotokan Karate Club is celebrating its official 30thAnniversary!
Celebrating this we are looking to update our tracksuits, and also offer new embroidered and printed hoodies, polo tops (men and women’s) and kit bags .
With respect to our huge achievements this year, we feel that it is only fair to our students that we update our kit and look professional on a national and international circuit. We are also hoping to take more students to competition next year and therefore everyone arriving in the same kit and tracksuits makes a huge impression on other clubs competing.
The kit is available to all students and parents, and we will be sending a letter and form home with the students showing all the new designs.
If all parents/guardians could fill in a form stating what items you wish to order and sizes and return the form the next training day.
Thank you everyone for your amazingcontinuous support!

Matt Stockham and Kirstie James, pass yondan.
On the 6th October 2012, weeks of gruelling and often painful training culminated in two students from Brecon SKC, Matthew Stockham and Kirstie James, travelling to Bath University to sit their 4th dan gradings under the auspices of Sensei Andy Sherry 8th Dan, Sensei Bob Poynton 7th Dan and Sensei Frank Brennan 7th Dan.
The day started at 11am with a training session that included basic drill work, all the advanced katas and a variety of kumite techniques.
At 1 o'clock all the students that were grading were told to assemble in the dojo at 2pm.
The 2nd and 3rd Dan gradings took place first and once they were finished, it was Matt and Kirstie's turn to sit their 4th dan grading. Kirstie was called up first and proceeded to give a very good performance in both basics and her chosen Kata, Jiin. This was followed by the Kumite section, and unfortunately she was called up against one of her fellow Welsh Squad members, Amanda Ward. Kirstie totally dominated the fight and completely overwhelmed her opponent with a viscious onslaught of rapid kicking and punching combinations.
After Kirstie had completed the first part of her grading, Matthew was next to be called to grade alongside only two other remaining students; this meant that there was no hiding place as the three karateka stood infront of the grading panel. Matthew performed his basics and his chosen Kata (also Jiin) flawlessly. However, it was in the Kumite that he shone.
Matthew was called up against a very good English fighter Joseph Birch, who is reknown for his very strong and fast kicking; but on the day Matthew completely outclassed his opponent and won with combination kicks that had his opponent reeling. He finished the fight with a double leg sweep which even had the examiners smiling.
Both students were called up to perform a final kata; Kirstie performed Chinte and Matthew Unsu.
After an extremely long wait both students were eventually told that they had passed; making them both the first students to attain 4th Dan in Brecon SKC.
Many congratulations to both Matthew and Kirstie from all Brecon club members and supporters!
