JKS Brecon (formally known as Brecon SKC) began its journey 1983, however, it was originally a Budo style club practing a combination of Karate, Aikido and Judo.
Its chief instructor was Bill Stone, however, when a disabling illness took its toll, and it was obvious that Bill could no longer continue teaching, the search began for someone to take his place.
The man that was to follow in Bill's prestigious footsteps was Derek Stockham; a young student from Merthyr Tydfil Karate Club, who was at the time instructing a small class of students at Llangattock Community Hall. Derek's only proviso for accepting the position was that the club should affiliate to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) and be instructed in the Shotokan style. From that day Brecon Shotokan Karate Club was born.
The club has gone from strength to strength over the years, producing black belts across all age ranges and international competitors that travel the globe fighting for Wales against the best Karate-ka in the world.
However, Brecon SKC has recently made the decision to change organisations, leaving the KUGB to affiliate to the JKS. The Japan Karate Shotorenmei has been established in the UK for over thirty years and has direct links with the Japanese Hombu Dojos. This organisation is growing rapidly within Great Britain and Ireland offering its students many more opportunities to compete and travel; Sensei Derek and Matt therefore decided this was the best move to make for their students.
JKS Brecon hopes to continue its phenomenal successes for many more years to come, winning more titles and developing more Welsh karateka to make their mark around the World.
