Richard Balding (Dickie), 2nd Dan
Began training in Brecon SKC : 1988
Gained black belt : 1992
Competition Achievements : 1st place, Welsh Championships, Senior Male Team Kumite 2002
I started training the same day as Matt Stockham, who was 8 years old at the time, andI was really impressed with what I saw. When I watched Sensei Derek Stockham doing his stuff I was hooked. Some 24 years later here we are. Having started karate at a relatively old age of 23 and also suffering several injuried along the way I didn't enter many competitions, but always gave my all for the club. My claim to fame is my participation in the Winning Senior Male Kumite Team in the Welsh Championships in 2002.
I count Sensei's Derek and Matt Stockham as my two closest friends and I am also Godfather to Nikki Jayne Stockham.
Sport karate or traditional karate, the choice is there, so come along and have a go. Young or old, there is something in karate for everyone. Like Sensei Matt Stockham, I wear my heart on my sleeve for the club and the family that run it.
Win, lose or draw as long as you give your all that counts in Brecon Shotokan Karate Club. If you've got the talent and the 'get up and go' attitude, Brecon Shotokan will get the best out of you.

I first started training in the martial arts in 1979, training in Shotokan Karate in a small dojo in Byfleet in Surrey. During the following years I trained in several martial art styles including Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ninjitsu and Taekwondo.
During 2005 – 2007 I trained in Go Kan Ryu Karate and passed my instructor courses in early 2006. When I left GKR I had 2 Dojo’s in Surrey where I taught and trained. With GKR I competed at a National level in both GKR and National All Style events.
In February 2007 I and my family moved to Brecon, and I was fortunate enough to find Brecon SKC to continue training and teaching. Having joined as an Instructor in a different style I then had to be retrained back into the Shotokan style in order to retake my Dan grading with the KUGB. Sensei Derek and Matt patiently took me all the way back to Heian Shodan and over the following years got me back into the position where I could sit my grading. Whilst doing this I was very honoured to be allowed to teach alongside Sensei Derek and Matt and still, today, enjoy that honoured position alongside a number of the clubs Black Belts.

From a mothers point of view.........
Rhydian was diagnosed from the age of six with Aspergers Syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As Rhydian found communication and social skills difficult, he had lots of frustrations which would often lead to anger. We realised from an early stage Rhydian needed to be kept active and have an outlet for all his extra energy. Firstly we tried rugby but there were too many 'grey' areas. A 'normal' child could cope with this but a child with Rhydian's conditions needed clear, concise and precise instructions; as there were none of these in rugby Rhydian struggled and would often feel left out and not socially accepted. This was the point we decided to try Karate.
Rhydian was seven when he first joined a local club in the valleys. At first he seemed to be accepted, however he still struggled to achieve and just went through the motions without having any spirit or thirst for the sport. As Rhydian progressed through the grades you could sense that people were seeing him as difficult and if he could not grasp the concept of harder combinations immediately as other children did, then he was allowed to fall behind.
During 2010 I affilated to Brecon SKC and took Rhydian with me. I was honest and open and explained the challenges Rhydian often faced, I was given reassurance that Rhydian would not be a 'forgotton child'. Sensei Derek and Matt spoke to Rhydian and told him it would be hard, Rhydian just smiled and knuckled down.
For three years Rhydian entered competitions and never passed through the first round. During 2011 however, he made it to the quarter finals in the Kyu grades for Ippon Kumite and quarter finals in the Kata division in the Welsh Championships. That day was amazing, it finally clicked. Then during November 2012 Rhydian passed his black belt!
This was one of my proudest moments as a mother, I always knew Rhydian had it in him, he just need the key to unlock his potential; Sensei Derek and Matt
possess that key.....Oss
